To strengthen educational exchange and inspire future architects, USE Electronics Co., Ltd. invited renowned Japanese architect Kazuo Matsuo, Vice President and Kinki Chapter Director of the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA), to deliver two lectures in Taiwan. Held on October 28 at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and October 29 at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), the sessions explored the theme “Evolving from Culture and Tradition toward Environmental and Social Innovation,” encouraging students to embrace creativity and sustainability in shaping the future of architecture. Under this theme, Matsuo shared his architectural philosophy and signature works, fostering dialogue and cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan in the fields of architecture and design.
Encouraging Creativity and Human-Nature Harmony
Drawing on the Zen spirit rooted in Japanese culture, Matsuo explained the origins and practice of his design approach. His works reflect a profound respect for traditional architecture and cultural heritage, harmonizing natural light, seasonal changes, and local context with human needs. By integrating nature, landscape, and culture, Matsuo creates spaces that resonate emotionally and bring happiness to people.
He encouraged students to pursue creativity boldly, becoming architects who drive social and national progress. Quoting Japanese thinker Yoshida Shōin, Matsuo reminded the audience: "No dream, no ideal, no plan, no action, no success." He urged young architects to dream big and strive for excellence to create designs that truly move people.
Building a Sustainable Future Through Collaboration
The lectures attracted enthusiastic participation from faculty and students across architecture departments, sparking lively discussions and diverse perspectives. Matsuo engaged closely with attendees, creating an inspiring atmosphere of exchange. USE Electronics Chairperson Junko Kato attended the event to express gratitude to NCKU and NTUST for their support, as well as to partners Union Co., Ltd., represented by General Manager Kai Takekawa and Advertising Manager Shintaro Nakai, for their assistance in making the event a success.
Architecture is more than creating spaces—it is a driving force for environmental stewardship and social progress. Through these lectures, we aim to bridge academia and industry, broaden students’ perspectives on architectural innovation and cultural integration, and promote sustainable development. We remain committed to working with diverse partners to create a better, more harmonious future.
